Memorial Walk

June 13, 2024

On May 30, 2024, the students and staff of Lakeview Elementary gathered to observe the anniversary of the discovery of 215 unmarked graves at the Kamloops Indian Residential School site that were found on May 23, 2001.  Several students led our school on a memorial walk leading the way with the Survivors Flag.  The route went through the school grounds, under the highway and past the Lhtako Band Office.  We stopped outside the band office while members of our Indigenous Leadership Club, led by Mrs. Carifelle, gave an offering of fresh bannock and dandelion jelly that she made with students.  Taking time to honour and remember the lost children and survivors of the residential schools is a small but important part of moving forward together, with an understanding that those institutions along with other laws, restrictions and actions, had a lasting impact on Indigenous communities.  We find value and warmth in taking the time to make positive connections with our Lhtako neighbours.
